Exterior Painting for Every Home Type in the Hills District

Brick, render, weatherboard — each surface needs a different approach. Here’s how we handle each one properly.

Brick Exterior Painting

Painting brick is a long-term commitment — once it’s painted, maintenance is ongoing. That makes getting it right the first time critical. Raw or previously painted brick needs to be thoroughly cleaned to remove dirt, mould, and any chalking from old paint. Any efflorescence — the white salt deposits that appear on brick surfaces — must be treated before painting, otherwise it continues to push through the new coating and cause adhesion failure. We use breathable, masonry-specific paints that allow moisture vapour to escape from the brick rather than trapping it behind the coating, which causes blistering and peeling over time.

Rendered Exterior Painting

Render is one of the most common exterior surfaces in Hills District homes and one of the most unforgiving when the prep isn’t done correctly. Hairline cracks in render are normal — but they need to be filled with a flexible filler before painting, not just painted over. Paint alone won’t bridge a crack and within one season of expansion and contraction it will open back up and be visible through the topcoat. We also check for any areas of render that have lifted or become hollow — these need to be repaired before painting, not hidden. On new or freshly repaired render, we always apply a sealer coat first to even out porosity and prevent the topcoat from soaking in unevenly.

Weatherboard Exterior Painting

Weatherboard homes need more preparation than any other exterior surface type — and they show a substandard paint job faster. Timber expands and contracts significantly with temperature changes, which means any paint that doesn’t flex with the board will crack and peel. We check every board for rot, damaged sections, and lifting paint before we start — replacing or treating where needed. All bare timber is primed with an oil-based primer that penetrates the wood grain and provides a stable base for the topcoat. We use flexible, timber-specific exterior paints that move with the boards rather than cracking against them. Cut lines around window frames, fascias, and trims are done carefully by hand for a clean, sharp result.

Fascias, Gutters & Trims

Often overlooked, fascias, gutters, and trims take more weathering punishment than almost any other part of the home. We paint and restore these as part of a full exterior repaint, using hard-wearing enamel finishes on timber trims and appropriate coatings on metal guttering. Getting the detail right on these elements is what lifts an exterior paint job from looking average to looking genuinely impressive.

Fences & Feature Walls

Fences and exterior feature walls are often left too long between repaints and end up requiring more work as a result. We assess timber, rendered, and brick fences for rot, cracks, and surface condition and prepare them properly before repainting — so the result holds up and doesn’t need doing again in twelve months.
