The Right Approach for Your Home’s Exterior All Surfaces And Trims

Exterior painting isn’t as simple as rolling on a coat of paint and calling it done. Your home’s exterior is exposed to UV, rain, heat, and humidity every single day, and the products and preparation required to handle that vary significantly depending on whether your home is brick, render, or weatherboard.

Get it wrong and you’re looking at peeling, cracking, and fading within a couple of years. Get it right and a quality exterior paint job protects your home and looks sharp for a decade or more.

Homeowners in The Hills District aren’t looking for a cheap paint job. They’re looking for a result that reflects the quality of the home — clean, sharp, professionally finished, and built to hold its appearance for years. That means the right products for the surface, proper preparation that addresses cracks and surface issues before they’re painted over, and a level of finish detail that does justice to a premium property. If you’ve been eyeing your roof and wondering what a proper repaint is actually going to cost, you’re not alone — it’s one of the most common questions we get from The Hills District homeowners. We’ve put together an honest, no-fluff breakdown to help you plan

What a Proper Exterior Paint Job Actually Involves

  • A Thorough Assessment Before Anything Is Quoted We look at the surface type, the condition of existing paint, any cracks, rot, mould, or moisture issues, and the level of sun and weather exposure before we price the job. This means you get an accurate quote that reflects the actual scope — not a low number that grows once the job starts
  • High-Pressure Washing Before Any Prep Begins Painting over a dirty, chalky, or mould-affected surface is one of the fastest ways to guarantee paint failure. Every exterior we paint is high-pressure washed first to remove dirt, mould, lichen, and loose or chalky paint. On weatherboards we adjust the pressure carefully to clean effectively without raising the timber grain.
  • Cracks Filled, Surfaces Primed, Problems Fixed Every crack is filled with the appropriate filler for the substrate — flexible compounds for render and timber, masonry filler for brick. Bare surfaces are primed before the topcoat goes on. Any rot, efflorescence, or surface issues identified during the assessment are addressed at this stage, not ignored.
  • Topcoats Applied Correctly for Lasting Results We apply the correct number of coats for the surface and product being used — never trying to get away with one coat where two are required. Finished edges are cut in cleanly by hand and every surface is checked under daylight before we consider the job complete.

Exterior Painting for Every Home Type in the Hills District

Brick, render, weatherboard — each surface needs a different approach. Here’s how we handle each one properly.

Brick Exterior Painting

Painting brick is a long-term commitment — once it’s painted, maintenance is ongoing. That makes getting it right the first time critical. Raw or previously painted brick needs to be thoroughly cleaned to remove dirt, mould, and any chalking from old paint. Any efflorescence — the white salt deposits that appear on brick surfaces — must be treated before painting, otherwise it continues to push through the new coating and cause adhesion failure. We use breathable, masonry-specific paints that allow moisture vapour to escape from the brick rather than trapping it behind the coating, which causes blistering and peeling over time.

Rendered Exterior Painting

Render is one of the most common exterior surfaces in Hills District homes and one of the most unforgiving when the prep isn’t done correctly. Hairline cracks in render are normal — but they need to be filled with a flexible filler before painting, not just painted over. Paint alone won’t bridge a crack and within one season of expansion and contraction it will open back up and be visible through the topcoat. We also check for any areas of render that have lifted or become hollow — these need to be repaired before painting, not hidden. On new or freshly repaired render, we always apply a sealer coat first to even out porosity and prevent the topcoat from soaking in unevenly.

Weatherboard Exterior Painting

Weatherboard homes need more preparation than any other exterior surface type — and they show a substandard paint job faster. Timber expands and contracts significantly with temperature changes, which means any paint that doesn’t flex with the board will crack and peel. We check every board for rot, damaged sections, and lifting paint before we start — replacing or treating where needed. All bare timber is primed with an oil-based primer that penetrates the wood grain and provides a stable base for the topcoat. We use flexible, timber-specific exterior paints that move with the boards rather than cracking against them. Cut lines around window frames, fascias, and trims are done carefully by hand for a clean, sharp result.

Fascias, Gutters & Trims

Often overlooked, fascias, gutters, and trims take more weathering punishment than almost any other part of the home. We paint and restore these as part of a full exterior repaint, using hard-wearing enamel finishes on timber trims and appropriate coatings on metal guttering. Getting the detail right on these elements is what lifts an exterior paint job from looking average to looking genuinely impressive.

Fences & Feature Walls

Fences and exterior feature walls are often left too long between repaints and end up requiring more work as a result. We assess timber, rendered, and brick fences for rot, cracks, and surface condition and prepare them properly before repainting — so the result holds up and doesn’t need doing again in twelve months.

With decades of industry experience, we have the systems and expertise needed to successfully manage commercial painting projects of all sizes.

Exterior Painting FAQ’s

Find answers to common questions about our services, process, and what to expect when working with our team.

A professionally painted exterior using quality products on a properly prepared surface should last 8–12 years in typical residential conditions. Weatherboard homes may need attention sooner due to timber movement, while well-prepared render and brick can hold a finish for longer. UV exposure, aspect, and local weather conditions all play a role — we’ll give you an honest assessment based on your specific home.

Premature peeling is almost always caused by one of three things — inadequate surface preparation, the wrong primer or no primer at all, or a product that wasn’t suited to the substrate. Painting over a dirty, chalky, or mould-affected surface is another common cause. When we requote a failing paint job we identify the root cause first so the same problem doesn’t repeat after we repaint.

Yes — always. Painting over a surface with mould, dirt, or chalky old paint is a guaranteed way to get adhesion failure. Every exterior we paint is high-pressure washed first. On weatherboards we adjust pressure to avoid raising the grain, and on render we check for any areas that may have been damaged by high pressure before proceeding.

Yes, provided the existing paint is in sound condition and properly prepared. If the existing paint is chalky, flaking, or poorly adhered it needs to be removed or treated before repainting. We assess the condition of existing coatings during the quoting stage and factor any additional preparation into the scope.

Efflorescence is caused by water moving through the brick and depositing mineral salts on the surface. It must be treated and removed before painting — if you paint over it, the salts continue to push through the new coating and cause adhesion failure. We treat efflorescence as part of the preparation process and use breathable masonry paints that allow moisture to escape rather than trapping it behind the coating.

Minor surface rot can sometimes be treated and stabilised with a penetrating epoxy consolidant before priming and painting. More significant rot requires the affected boards to be replaced before painting. We assess every board during the quoting stage and give you an honest view of what needs replacing versus what can be treated — we won’t paint over rot and pretend it isn’t there.

Exterior painting costs vary based on the size of the home, the surface type, the condition of the existing paint, and the extent of preparation required. Weatherboard homes typically cost more than render due to the additional prep involved. We provide free, detailed quotes so you know exactly what you’re paying for before any work begins.
